FAQ

Healtcare

As from 10 September 2014, the National Basic Health Insurance Act has become effective. This means that every resident of Suriname must take out health care insurance for at least basic health care.

You can choose for either the AZPAS Basic Insurance that covers more than the legal basic health package and the AZPAS Plus Insurance that provides extensively more cover.

It is always advisable to read the policy conditions. Should you still have any doubts, then please feel free to contact us or your insurance agent. Our contact details are included on the contact page.

Complete an application form and submit this form to Assuria. You can find one of our offices that is closest to you on the contact page. The processing time of an application may be affected if we an examination/laboratory test necessary, or when medical information is required from a general practitioner or specialist. After approval, you make the payment. After receipt of your payment, you will receive an AZPAS card.

Assuria has a number of additional coverages which can be added to your AZPAS insurance against additional premium payments. You can find an overview of these additional coverages here.

To determine your premium for AZPAS Basic or AZPAS Plus we would like to prepare a personal quote. This will be based on your age and any other additional cover(s). You can make the payments as follows:

  • Monthly
  • Quarterly
  • Semi-annually
  • Annually

In case of quarterly, semi-annual, or annual payments, we offer an additional discount. In addition, companies can get a volume discount and may be eligible for profit sharing.

The procedure for hospital admission is that the valid AZPAS card always needs to be submitted. The documents required to obtain a referral note are sent to us by the hospital.

If your admission has already been planned by the specialist, you can send the documents regarding the referral note for the admission to us in advance. We will then prepare the documents for approval of the referral and send this to the hospital concerned where you will be admitted.

The local AZPAS Health Insurance unfortunately does not cover health care abroad. To obtain health insurance for when you are abroad, you can take out an AZPAS International Platinum or Diamond Insurance.

Life

Payment in case of death is guaranteed. However, it is possible payment of the benefit is refused in case of:

  • Murder or complicity in murder of the beneficiary
  • Suicide of the insured person during the first two years of the insurance
  • Nondisclosure of medical information that may have been decisive in the approval of the insurance

A Funeral Insurance is a lifelong insurance and covers the costs of the funeral.

A Life Insurance is often a requirement of the bank when providing a mortgage loan. Such an insurance will repay the mortgage amount in whole or in part upon the death of the insured person.

Also, in the event of the passing of one of the partners in a household, the surviving partner often is left with financial worriers. The household now has one income less, or someone needs to be involved to take over certain activities in the family.

A Life Insurance is an insurance that is related to the Life or Death of a person.

Depending on the type of insurance, the insurance can be transformed into a non-contributory insurance. Even if the policy is non-contributory, payment of an amount is guaranteed. This amount is however lower than it would be if the premium payment were to be continued.

It is possible to raise the insured value of your Life Insurance in the interim. We will then reassess the health requirements.

The amount of the premium is determined by your age, gender, duration of the insurance, the required insured amount (the amount you would like to have paid out on a certain date) and your health condition.

There are different reasons to take out Life Insurance:

  • You are assured of an income for your old age
  • Your surviving relatives will be financially taken care of in the event of your passing
  • You contribute to savings for your future
  • You don’t burden your surviving relatives with (mortgage) debts in the event of your passing during the term of the insurance

It is possible to take out Life Insurance in SRD and USD. Payment of the insurance premium will also need to be paid in this currency.

You can sell your car either including or excluding insurance:

Excluding insurance

The current insurance is cancelled upon the sale. After submission of the sales contract and the insurance sticker, the seller will be reimbursed for the remaining insurance premium, after submitting the insurance certificate.

Including insurance

You state in the sales contract that you are selling the vehicle including Car Insurance. The buyer will then be reimbursed, and this reimbursement can be used to pay the new insurance, in part or in whole.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to pay the WAM Insurance (for the Compulsory Third-Party Liability Insurance) in instalments. It is however possible to pay the CASCO premium (for the Comprehensive Insurance) in 3, 6, 9 or 12 instalments through an automatic debt collection. This collection will be done using your giro account at the bank.

Upon buying a new vehicle you will need to take out insurance again.

Both the WAM (Compulsory Third-Party Liability Insurance) and the CASCO (Comprehensive Insurance) Insurance only provide cover within Suriname and Guyana.

You are entitled to a vehicle fleet discount when you have more than one vehicle insured under the same name.

Your premium depends on the type of vehicle (car, truck, bus or moped) you would like to insure (mainly the weight of the vehicle), the requested cover and the age of the regular driver.
